ABOUT THE TRIP
A perfect adventure to experience the energy of the North, visit popular locations, hunt for the Northern Lights, and go out to the sea in search of whales.
The program includes going out to sea to search for whales, hunting for the northern lights, tasting seafood and local cuisine, visiting the half-frozen Batareysky waterfall, the Ship Cemetery and other popular Teriberka locations, the beaches of the Barents Sea, snow-covered tundra, feeding deer and huskies, experiencing the energy and the Spirit of the North in the best conditions for an internal reboot at the edge of the earth, on the shores of the ancient northern ocean.
Starting from September, when the weather is clear, at dusk, you can already see the Northern Lights. It does not happen every day, we will monitor the weather forecast. March is a good month for that and there are lots of chances to see an aurora!
The Kola Peninsula is in the top 10 places in the world to see the Northern Lights! And the fishing village of Teriberka on the very edge of the Earth will add its atmosphere to our trip. Further – there is only the Arctic Ocean, the waves beat against the rocky shores, and off the coast you can see seals, dolphins, and even whales!
At the end of March, the chances of meeting whales during a boat trip increase significantly. The first shoals of fish are already entering the bay, followed by dolphins and whales!
At this time, the road to Teriberka is unlikely to be blocked with snow, and therefore the closure of the roads should not disturb our plans.
ITINERARY
Plan for the day: Arrival in Murmansk, transfer to Teriberka, check-in at the hotel, lunch at the hotel, ship graveyard, old Teriberka, dinner.
We meet in the morning at Murmansk airport and drive to Teriberka. The road is not fast and depends on the weather conditions. We check into a hotel on the shore of the Barents Sea, have lunch at the hotel's panoramic restaurant and set off for the first acquaintance with Teriberka. Today we will see a real sperm whale (cachalot) skeleton and a cemetery of ships lying there since the 60s of the last century.
For dinner, we will return to the restaurant at our hotel, where we can try fresh seafood (cod steak, scallops, and crab). After that, we will get to know each other, take a metaphorical map and formulate an intention for the trip. Closer to the night, if the weather is good, we will go hunting for the northern lights.
Note: Transfer: about 130 km (3 hours). Most of the route we will drive along an atmospheric road among snows and mountainous terrain.
Distance: about 3-4 km (about 1-3 hours)
Plan for the day: Breakfast, new Teriberka, snowmobile excursion to the Barents Sea: Dragon eggs, Battery waterfall, late lunch in a gastropub, rest, dinner.
In the morning after breakfast, we will have a fascinating excursion to the Teriberka Natural Park. We will visit the beach of round stones, the Dragon Eggs, and then, having overcome a low pass, we will go to the half-frozen Battery waterfall. From there you can see fantastic views of the ocean. It is worth dressing warmly, because we will spend several hours walking, and strong winds can blow from the sea. If possible, we will get to the place on snowmobiles from the new Teriberka, it depends on the height of the snow cover.
It will be an interesting walk along the coast of the Barents Sea and the tundra!
For lunch, we will visit one of the best places in Teriberka, the Mole gastropub.
And again, in the evening, if the weather is clear, we will go chasing the northern lights.
Note: Distance: about 10-12 km (about 4 hours).
Plan for the day: Breakfast, going out to sea in search for whales, lunch at the hotel, old Teriberka, whale skeleton, giant swings and other attractions, dinner at a restaurant.
Today after breakfast we will go for a boat trip!
We will reach a lighthouse, leave the bay for the open sea, if we are lucky, we will see some local marine life – seals, whales, dolphins, fin whales, humpback whales and orcas (killer whales). This is possible if the weather is good and clear, and no storms happen. If the weather forecast is bad, the captain will announce it in advance, and the sailing will be moved to the previous day (day 2).
We will return from the sea for lunch at our hotel.
After the lunch, we will go for a walk in the old Teriberka and the surrounding area. There are giant swings on the shores of the Barents Sea, and a fishing ship thrown ashore during a storm, which has already become the hallmark of Teriberka. Here are abandoned buildings and an abandoned school, and even the northernmost Arctic Brewery, as well as the popular skeleton scenery for the film Leviathan. We’ll visit the reindeer and husky farm, where we will have a chance to feed the animals with reindeer moss and take pictures with them.
Having walked enough, we will go to the final dinner with a view of the Arctic at the restaurant Teribersky coast.
After dinner, we’ll go for the traditional hunt for the northern lights.
Note: Distance: about 6 km (about 2 hours).
Plan for the day: Breakfast, transfer to Murmansk, nuclear icebreaker Lenin, lunch at a restaurant, airport.
Today after breakfast we are leaving for Murmansk.
If we arrive early in Murmansk and there are no long queues, we will visit the nuclear icebreaker Lenin. The legendary giant ship with a nuclear power plant, which had no analogues in the world before. It was developed in the USSR in the 50s of the 20th century. It was used to provide navigation along the Northern Sea Route. Since 1989, the icebreaker, which served for 30 years, has been permanently moored in the seaport of Murmansk. You will see the engine room, wardroom, dining room, medical unit, and other facilities.
Before leaving for the airport, we will stop for lunch at the Tundra gastronomic restaurant.
Note: Note: Transfer: about 130 km (about 3 hours).
Most of the route we drive along an atmospheric road among snows and mountainous terrain.
